These ladies have brooms, and they know how to use them.

The Barrhead Curling Club hosted the Ladies Bonspiel this past weekend and it was a great success.

Dozens of teams from the surrounding area, and at least one from Fort Saskatchewan, competed in three divisions on three sheets of pristine ice.

The weekend also featured a banquet on the second-floor gallery of the club on Saturday night.

Sunday was championship day.

For two hours, six teams vied for curling glory as a crowd of family and friends looked on from the second-floor gallery.

Team Kluin clashed with Team Bandola for the ‘A’ division Championship on sheet two and handled the veterans with ease winning the match handily 8-3.

In the sixth end, the score was 5-3 for the Kluin team, with Bandola threatening, however, the Kluin side squeaked out of the situation and managed to hold off until the seventh end where they picked up three points and the win.

“This is our second year as a team; we worked really well together, and we made all of our shots,” said skip Audrey Kluin.

“We wanted to play one rock at a time and play our game,” said team Kluin lead Karla Montgomery.

On sheet three the ‘B’ division championship was being contested by Team Properzi and Team Kalmbach.

Properzi took the lead in the first end, then extended their lead to three in the second end. Kalmbach got on the board in the third, picking up one point. In the fifth, Properzi had a commanding 6-1 lead until the sixth when Kalmbach cut their lead in half.

That would be all for Kalmbach as Properzi scored three more points in the seventh and final end.

Properzi took the ‘B’ division championship with an 8-3 blowout.

The ‘C’ division championship required an extra end to settle the match.

Team Clouston took the lead early picking up two points in the first end. Later Team Greilach countered with three points in the third end to take the lead 3-2.

It was a back-and-forth tilt that saw the score tied 5-5 in the seventh. In the extra end, the Clouston rink picked up three points to claim an 8-5 victory.

“The ice was a little bit tricky to figure out at the end there, but we had a great time this year,” said skip Teresa Clouston.

The atmosphere at the Curling Club was electric. It was three days of tough but fun competition

“It was an absolute success this year, the reaction from the town and the local support was really good,” said bonspiel organizer Tammy Caughlin.
