A local cross country skier put up a valiant effort at Junior World Cross Country Ski Championship two weeks ago.
Athabasca native Maya MacIsaac-Jones, who now competes with the Rocky Mountain Racers club out of Canmore, took on the world at the event that ran Feb. 2 to 8 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
MacIsaac-Jones opened the event on Feb. 3 by qualifying for the classic sprint final in 29th place in her heat, and then ended up 25th later in the day in the final.
She followed that up the next day by finishing 45th in the 5 kilometre free skate.
It was another 45th place finish two days later on Feb. 6 in the 5/5km skiathlon event with a time of 31 minutes, 3.7 seconds – four minutes back of the winner.
MacIsaac-Jones finished up the world championship by helping Canada placed 10th in the 4x3.3km women’s relay on Feb. 8.
Off to PG
The season doesn’t stop for both MacIsaac-Jones and for another Athabasca native, Hans Asfeldt, as they head to Prince George later this week as part of Team Alberta’s cross country ski team at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Both will arrive in at the Games this weekend for the second week of competition with the individual races starting Monday and the relays going Feb. 28.
