The Barrhead Curling Rink was full of action over the weekend, as 16 teams competed in the 2013 Ladies Bonspiel.
For the second year in a row, the victory was claimed by local team Marg Jones, Kim Luciuk, Kelsey Mccracken, and Sandy Holowaychuk. The winning team played four games over the course of the two days, and won each match.
Team member Mccracken said she and her teammates weren’t complaining when they claimed the tournament victory, and it felt really good to win again for the second year in a row.
“We were a little surprised,” she said. “You don’t get very many teams that can win back to back.”
The happy victor said she really wanted to make note of a specific turning point in the final game of the tournament.
As the local ladies competed against Athabasca for the win, four blue stones remained closer to the middle than any of Barrhead’s red. As Luciuk stepped up to throw her stone, everything changed.
In a very close game, Luciuk had a shot that would make it or break it, said Mccracken. And she made it.
“Kim’s rock came down, and she tapped two rocks forward to move one of our red rocks into middle,” said Mccracken. “It would have been a very different game without that shot. It solidified the win.”
Barrhead Curling Club manager Tammy Caughlin said the turnout for the tournament was good, and she was pleased with the weekend.
“There were lots of teams from out of town that came back to play again this year,” said Caughlin. “It tells us they’re really having a good time.”
