A local gymnast took one medal at the recent provincial championships.
Rylan Wagner, 12, won individual gold on the rings, but settled for seventh overall at the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics Provincials that took place in Lethbridge Apr. 17 to 19.
“It felt good. It was tougher competition this year, because it was another group this time than last year, so that was neat,” Wagner said.
After his rings gold, he fell in the overall by placing eighth on both the parallel bars and the high bar, ninth on both the vault and floor and 13th on the pommel horse.
His mom Angela said Rylan and his coach changed his floor routine just before the event to try to go for gold as his old routine was unlikely to achieve anything above fourth.
“Unfortunately, Ry did take a fall on one of the tumbling lines,” she said.
“Despite this finish, he received a lot of attention for even attempting such a huge routine – many coaches from other gyms were complementary and impressed with his performance.”
Rylan has in gymnastics since he was five. He began with Athabasca Flips Gymnastics, but moved his training to the St. Albert Dynamyx Club last year.
“We’re really proud of him,” said his mom.
“He’s very dedicated and he’s working really hard. We’re glad to see it’s panning out for him.”
