Local basketball courts were busy last week as schools in Athabasca and Boyle hosted regional competitions.

Last Thursday, Edwin Parr Composite hosted the boys ‘A’ event while Landing Trail Intermediate School was the site of the boys ‘B’ event. Both girls events were held at Boyle School.

At EPC, the host Pacers came out on top in the finals over the skilled team from Vilna School.

“The guys played one of their best games of the year. It was a great team effort to be able to step up and play against a team of that size, while being a smaller team,” said EPC coach Brad Aasen.

“They used their bodies and played their positions properly. It was just a fantastic effort on their part to come out with the win.”

The EPC junior boys will move on to zones this coming weekend in Barrhead.

Boyle School’s junior boys were also on the court at EPC. They lost to Smoky Lake in the consolation finals.

Over at LTIS, the host school produced three teams and welcomed Radway to round out the field. In the end, the LTIS 1 team, featuring a number of Grade 7 students, won the event, with LTIS 3 and their younger players finishing second.

Over in Boyle, meanwhile, a number of girls teams were working hard on the courts as they chased regional glory.

EPC sent two teams. The Grade 8 squad lost in the ‘B’ championship final to the host Boyle girls, while the Grade 9 girls won the event with a close victory over Rochester. The Grade 9 girls will move on to zones in Barrhead while the younger girls are done.

“They have come a long way. They played some good basketball and I’m proud of them,” said EPC coach Lindsey Gerlach of the younger team.

Neither of the Boyle teams will be moving on, as there is no zone competition for junior high clubs, which allowed coach Darrell Bergmann to look back on the season as a whole.

“The boys are a young team. They’re building for the future, and they’re looking good for next year with a lot of returning players,” he said. “And I’m real pleased with the girls. They played really well.”

LTIS also sent two girls teams to the Boyle event. The ‘A’ team beat the ‘B’ squad 24-6 and went on to lose to EPC 24-14. The ‘B’ squad went on to lose 25-20 to Rochester.
