The skaters in the Barrhead Figure Skating Club want to show their skills and abilities during their annual Christmas Gala on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Barrhead Figure Skating, president Diane Magill said the club has been very successful, so far this year.
“On (Saturday) Nov. 22 we had two skaters place in the medals at a competition in St. Albert,” Magill said.
Faith Frigon won gold in the first star competition, while Amanda Horner took home the bronze medal in the free skate competition.
Magill said for those people who are not able to travel and watch local skaters compete in out of town competitions, the club is planning to put on a special Christmas Gala.
“The skaters are always so excited about the gala,” she said. “It gives everyone a chance to show their friends and loved ones all the things they have learned this year.”
After the gala, the public is also welcome to stay and watch the club’s annual award ceremony.
“It is just like the annual awards ceremony at the start of the school year,” Magill said. “All the awards are based on last year’s performances.” Magill said, adding that it was hard to choose the award winners, because everyone worked so hard and had so many good skates.
Magill said that even though the skaters are busy getting ready for this year’s Christmas Gala that does not mean the club is not taking any new members.
“We are always looking for new members. We have programs for any age starting at three years old,” she said, adding that the sky’s the limit on the other end.
Although, Magill noted that any new skaters, especially the younger ones, would probably have to wait until the new year until they entered a program.
“We take a short break during the Christmas season, but we are right back at it in the new year,” she said.
Those wanting to join the Barrhead Figure Skating Club can contact the club’s executive by email at [email protected].
People can also can find out more information about the club’s programs by speaking to coach Misty Blake on any skating day, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday starting at 4 p.m.
Magill said visiting the rink would also give new, prospective skaters an idea of what the club’s programs are like.
As for the Christmas Gala, performances start at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Agrena. The skating portion of the gala goes to about 6 p.m. and will be followed by a ‘Skate with Santa’.
The awards portion will begin at about 7 p.m. in the Agrena’s multipurpose room.
Admission for the Christmas Gala is free, but the Barrhead Figure Skating Club is asking everyone to bring a non-perishable food item for the FCSS Food Bank.
Magill said the club is always looking for volunteers for the Christmas Gala. For those wanting to volunteer they can contact her at 780-674-7256 or by email at [email protected].
