Local teams advance in SPHL

There remain a few Athabasca teams left standing in the Sturgeon Pembina Hockey League playoffs. In the Novice division, it was a battle between two Athabasca teams this past weekend to see who would advance to the league final.

There remain a few Athabasca teams left standing in the Sturgeon Pembina Hockey League playoffs.

In the Novice division, it was a battle between two Athabasca teams this past weekend to see who would advance to the league final.

As it turned out, the result came down to being decided 17 seconds into double overtime on Sunday morning at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex with the Spider Hawks coming out with the victory.

They will now take on a team from Slave Lake.

In Atom action, the Atom B Storm Hawks play game two of their semifinal Saturday at the Multiplex after losing 6-5 in Wabasca, while the Atom A Hawks face Mayerthorpe on the weekend in their semifinal.

The PeeWee B Hawks as still in the playoff hunt after pulling out a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon at the Multiplex over Whitecourt in the opening game of their two-game, total goal semifinal series.

Jacob Hayward opened the scoring for the Hawks and Nayte Ramey netted the other two goals, including the game winner late in the third period. Game two is set for this weekend in Whitecourt.

The other series features Swan Hills against Sangudo.

Over in the Bantam division, one team is through to the final while the other is done.

The Hawks squad coach by Dustin Chisholm finished off Hinton in their semifinal, beating them 8-2 Saturday on the road and then taking an easy 7-4 win at home on Sunday.

For the other Hawks squad, coached by Neil Hanzel, they had a rough time losing both contests to Mayerthorpe.

The Midget Hawks are also still in the hunt for a league title, after beating Edson 5-3 Sunday in Edson.
