Locals do well at national x-country event

The recent youth national cross country event was an Athabasca family affair. Maya, Michael and Anna MacIsaac-Jones all took part in the Haywood Ski Nationals in Thunder Bay, ON from Mar.

The recent youth national cross country event was an Athabasca family affair.

Maya, Michael and Anna MacIsaac-Jones all took part in the Haywood Ski Nationals in Thunder Bay, ON from Mar. 15 to 21 in what could be described as some very challenging snow conditions.

Maya, 19, who lives in Canmore and skis with the national junior team, finished the event with a silver medal in the junior women’s 20 kilometre mass start free technique on the last day of competition.

Earlier in the week, Maya was eighth in the 10km open women’s classic event as well as eighth in the open women’s free technique, though she did finish that race as the top junior women’s skier.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Michael – who skis with the Rocky Mountain Racers based in Canmore – ended up with some respectable finishes. He was 22nd in the 10km junior boys free technique, followed that up with a 36th place in the 7.5km classic race and concluded the week with a 30th in the 15km mass start free technique.

Closing out the results was 13-year-old Anna, who placed 20th our of 70 racers in the juvenile girls 5km free technique to open the competition.

She would then finish 32nd in the 5km classic race and 34th in the 7.5km mass start free technique race.
