Nineteen teams battled each other and some tricky ice conditions last weekend during the 2014 Athabasca Curling Club Mens Bonspiel.
In the end, all three of Sunday’s event finals came down to the wire.
In the A Event final, Perry LeMessurier’s rink took two in the last end of a back-and-forth game to defeat Wayne Schinkinger 8-7.
“A very close game both ways,” LeMessurier described. “Challenging ice; keen, but challenging.
“I thought it was a very good bonspiel.”
In the B Event final, Kurtis Wiselka’s Even Par Golf rink stole a point in an extra end to defeat Rob Balay 8-7.
And in the C Event final, Kim Wildfong’s rink scored two in the last end — confirmed by a measurement — to come from behind over Dennis Saby, 6-5.
The mens bonspiel brings a successful curling season to a close, noted club president Schinkinger.
Executive member Faye Stevenson added that entries in the mens bonspiel were up this year, including four out-of-town rinks and six teams that had father-son combinations; a positive sign for the future of the sport.
