The annual Men’s Bonspiel Curling Tournament took place over the weekend at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

19 teams from around the region took part in the event which gave out cash prizes and sponsorship items as well.

“This year, the teams entered were down a bit from last year and spring break probably had something to do with it, but we did have six teams from out of town competition,” said Athabasca Curling Club president Wayne Schinkinger. “Each team who won gets a cash prize at the end and all the winners [for each section] also get a sponsored prize and this year it is a golf t-shirt that’s embroidered with sponsor names as well.”

The winners of this year’s A championship were Team Martin, while Team Semalta Communications Inc. and Team Breckenridge won the B and C championships, respectively.

The competition was the last of the season. The new season will begin in mid-October after the club has their Annual General Meeting and hosts a registration night where curlers of all ages can come out and sign up for the league.

In the end, regardless of the prizes won or skill levels of the men on the ice this past weekend, the competition was a success for everyone and that’s all that really matters, according to Schinkinger.

“I think everyone had a good time and they are all pretty happy,” he noted. “This is the last competition and we are done for the season now so I think everyone enjoyed the last weekend and that’s the most important thing.”
