The Boyle Blazers midget team opened their 2012-13 season with a pair of losses at the Millview Recreation Complex last weekend.
On Friday the team was home to St. Paul in a tight game that ultimately ended up as a 4-2 loss. Ryan Kilar and Wes Thompson scored the goals for the Blazers.
Discipline was an issue in the game as the team ran into penalty trouble on too many occasions, according to head coach Mark Kilar. Team captain Trevor Antal agreed with that assessment.
“The penalties kind of killed us,” he said.
The local boys also got off to a bit of a slow start before coming on in the second period.
“The effort was pretty good,” said the coach.
On Sunday the Blazers were in action again, this time hosting Cold Lake. Though the visiting team was different, the result was the same; a 4-2 loss. Wes Thompson scored both Boyle goals.
“We got into a little bit of penalty trouble again,” noted the coach.
The visiting team scored on their first shift, forcing the Blazers to play catch-up the rest of the way.
Ultimately the local boys played about 50 minutes of great hockey on Sunday, according to the coach; it was the other 10 minutes that wound up costing them.
This weekend the Blazers will be on the road for games in Provost and Wainwright.
“We’ve got to get in the win column.”
