The Athabasca Midget Hawks got the jump on Jasper in Game One of their provincial playoff series with a 5-1 win at home last Saturday.

The Hawks used the game to rebound from their disappointing provincial elimination at the hands of Riviere Qui Barre earlier this month. But they were ready for Jasper in the first game of the two-game, total points series.

“I told them to feed off the last game we played in Riviere Qui Barre because it was one of our best all year. The boys really came out strong (against Jasper),” said head coach Duane Terrien.

“Robbie Mason made a couple key saves at the beginning of the third period, (and) Cody Bishop ended up getting a hat trick. He played a really good game.”

Now the Hawks are up by four goals going into the second game of the series, which will be held in Jasper on Sunday. The team will be a little shorthanded with some players called away to a ski competition, but they will have Cole Hamilton back in the lineup after he missed Game One due to a suspension.

“He’s been a key part of our team all year,” said Terrien.

Athabasca hasn’t lost to Jasper yet this year, but they still intend to bring their ‘A’ game this weekend as they seek to finish them off and move on to the next round.

The Hawks will practice a couple times this weekend before heading to Jasper on Sunday.

“We’re going to go down there and take it to them.”
