Midget Rock get pair of wins

The Westlock midget lacrosse team rocked the competition last Saturday, defeating the Edmonton Warriors MB2 team 9-2 and the Edmonton Warriors MB1 team 4-2.

The Westlock midget lacrosse team rocked the competition last Saturday, defeating the Edmonton Warriors MB2 team 9-2 and the Edmonton Warriors MB1 team 4-2.

“I’m really proud of all the guys because this was two big wins for the team,” midget Rock coach Mike Ivey said.

After stumbling out of the gate with two-straight loses early on in the season, the Rock have quickly bounced back and now sport an impressive five-game winning streak.

As the Westlock bunch is playing without a home this season they are the only team in the league to play two games in one day, Ivey said.

With Jubilee Arena set for demolition and the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre not yet open to the public, the team will play all their scheduled home games in either St. Albert or Edmonton.

In the first game against the Warriors MB2 the club took the lead early and never looked back.

“In the first period we scored a lot of our goals and were up early on which made it hard for them to catch up,” he said.

In the second game, which was only a few hours later against the Warriors MB1, the boys’ endurance was tested, Ivey said.

“Our guys were still able to run the floor and kept up their endurance, which was unbelievable for both games,” Ivey said.

With a few new faces joining the team this year there is still room for improvement.

“We have four new players on our team this year so we are still working on our positioning and how to work together out on the field,” he said.

The club’s next challenge will be versus the Leduc Crush on Monday, May 14.
