All hail to MTM!
The Barrhead side took top honours in a baseball tournament featuring teams from Meadowview, Glenreagh, Mosside, Neerlandia and Swan Hills.
It proved a great way for Terese and Kelvin Koch to bow out as MTM coaches.
The County of Barrhead Mixed Minor Ball event on Saturday, June 1 was for midget age level – children aged 16 through 18 – although several underage kids were also involved.
Each team had two qualifying games. Based on wins/losses and points they were placed in either the A, B, or C finals.
MTM placed in the A finals against Meadowview, with a regular season record of one loss and one win against them.
On this day, however, MTM were comfortable winners by 12 points after four and a half innings. The umpires called the game as it was impossible for Meadowview to catch up, leaving MTM the league winner.
“The kids played really well and their hitting was impressive with the maximum of 5 points in all but one inning,” said Terese Koch.
“It was quite exciting to get this tournament win as this is our last year coaching and also for all the grade 12’s on the team who are done after this season.”
Koch said she and her husband had coached out of MTM for about 10 years.
“It has been fun, but our youngest is graduating and so our time is done also,” she said.
Koch added the county minor ball season lasted about one and a half months. It ended last Thursday so no more practices will be held.
“We saw lots of improvements in our players,” said Koch. “Most are strong hitters and we have good coverage on the field with many improvements in that area. Mostly these guys are all good sports and very coachable. We have enjoyed our time with them.”
Koch added more county ball tournaments would be coming up.
