Mudryk Classic Paddle, Cycle events on the horizon

The 10th annual Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic is less than a month away.

This year’s event, which has raised almost $700,000 for Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute, is set for Saturday, June 16. As always, Boyle native Mudryk, his celebrity guests and all the event attendees will hit the links at Skeleton Lake Golf Club and then meet for a special dinner and dance at the Boyle Community Centre.

But before any of that happens, there are some annual events that coincide with the Mudryk Classic and help to raise money for the Cross.

June 2 will be a busy day with both the Battle of the Paddle and United Cycle To Boyle events taking place.

An all-female event, the Battle of the Paddle is set for a 1 p.m. start at the Paradise Valley Boat Launch at North Skeleton Lake. Four-lady teams hit the lake in wacky costumes for a fun race. With team names like the Mexican Mojitos and the Pussycat Dolls (with corresponding costumes), the event is always lots of fun. Five teams are participating this year and everyone is welcome to come out and watch the race.

Also held on June 2 will be the United Cycle to Boyle, in which brave cyclists make the 140-kilometre trek from Fort Saskatchewan to Boyle. Also this year there will be a special cycle event for the ‘over 50 club’ which will give veteran cyclists the opportunity to try a shorter route, from Fort Saskatchewan to Waskateanau.

After both events, there will be a barbeque at 6 p.m. at the Mudryk-Harbarenko Lake Acreage, the proceeds of which will go to the Classic.

Other events in advance of the Classic include A Night With Bryan’s Angels at Lexus of Edmonton on June 7, and Bryan’s Angels Stepping Up to Cancer at the Royal Glenora in Edmonton. Other fundraising initiatives will also be going on before, during and after the event.

The goal this year is to raise enough money to purchase a piece of equipment known as a Linac-MR, which allows doctors to see and treat cancer with radiation therapy in real time. This new technology is a significant step forward in cancer treatment.

Confirmed special guests for this year’s event include TSN’s Dan O’Toole, curlers Ben Hebert, John Morris, Kevin Koe and Carter Rycroft, Paul Boyd from Inside Edition, CTV Edmonton’s Rob Williams and Daryl McIntyre, Global Edmonton sports anchor Kevin Karius and Gillian Foote from 100.3 The Bear.

Dinner tickets are nearly sold out. Volunteers, sponsors and donations are still being sought.

The event is also offering three scholarships valued at $1,000 to post-secondary students currently attending or enrolled in college or university who are battling cancer (in treatment or in check-up). Applications are available on the event website.

“The momentum is just phenomenal,” said event organizer Terry Mudryk. “I’m looking forward to the event for all the excitement it creates, but the cause is the most important thing.”
