The Muskeg Creek Trail went to the dogs on Saturday.

The Northern Alberta Mushers Association (NAMA) put on Athabasca’s first Fun Day Dog Sled Race on the weekend.

Though called a race, the event wasn’t particularly competitive.

“It’s more for fun, experience and practice for the racers,” said organizer Rickie Stetsko.

Drivers led teams of dogs out onto the trails, for traditional sledding as well as skijoring, where skiers are dragged along by their dogs.

When the dogs needed a rest, racers returned to a nearby chalet for snacks and warmth.

The event was the brainchild of Bradie Dearle. The Athabasca girl has been dog sledding for most of her 14 years, but was unable to race as much as she wanted to this year. So she persuaded NAMA to bring a race to her.

“Fun is the main thing. The dogs love it,” she said.

Both Dearle and Stetsko are hoping that the event will become an annual tradition.

“We want to bring some awareness to the sport,” said Stetsko.
