So far this season, Athabasca’s Peewee Trappers are playing perfect baseball.
The team won their first two games in early May and then had a lot of time off thanks to a pair of rainouts and the May long weekend. They finally got back on the field last Saturday when they played host to Gibbons for a double header at Jubilee Ball Park, winning 17-12 and 24-9 to improve their record to 4-0.
“I probably wouldn’t have predicted (an undefeated start) at the beginning,” said coach Ron Bay, who has been impressed with his team’s effort so far.
As evidenced by their output on Saturday, the Trappers have been powerhouses at the plate so far this year, and the coach credits the batting practice they did at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex in April for that.
The team has also received some good pitching, he said.
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the pitching and the hitting,” he said. “The base running and defense need a little bit of work, but that’s to be expected. If you’re playing games and not practicing, it’s hard to work on those two aspects.”
Improving those two elements of the game will be the focus of the team’s upcoming slate of practices, as they prepare for the remainder of the short season.
This week they’ll be busy, with a game in Clyde on Wednesday followed by a set with Redwater this weekend, also in Clyde.
“There’s still room to improve, (but) we’re playing some good ball.”
