Many eyes will be focused on Sochi, Russia from February 6 - 26 when Onoway’s extraordinary athlete, Amanda Ammar, competes in several cross-country skiing events at the Winter Olympics.
Amanda, daughter of Frank and Jody Ammar, attended Onoway Elementary and Onoway High School. The OES Jackrabbit program initiated by Phil Dunn played a big part in Amanda’s early skiing days, and she successfully completed the various levels. At age 17 she left OHS to reside in Canmore and become part of the National Ski Team. She did not disappoint her many supporters and in 2006 at age 19, she competed in the Turin, Italy Winter Olympic Games. She gained valuable experience there as she competed in sprint, 10 km, and women’s relay.
Due to illness and other factors, Amanda did not compete in the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. She formed her own ski team, Team Ninja, and continued to train hard. It paid off when, in the qualifying races at Canmore earlier this month, Amanda was selected to be part of the Canadian Women’s Ski Team to compete in Sochi. She could be competing in some or all of these events: long distance, women’s relay, 10 km classic, 15 km pursuit and 30 km race. Amanda will turn 28 on February 6, the day the Olympics begin.
Amanda’s journey has been a 20-year labour of love. To achieve her level of excellence requires incredibly hard work, perseverance (and money!). Amanda’s parents often comment about how appreciative Amanda is of all her supporters – friends and family – who have inspired her and encouraged her along the way.
Amanda, Onoway is extremely proud of you! To think that it all began here in small-town Alberta! Good luck as you pursue your dream!
