The Edwin Parr Composite High School Pacers football team won 38-0 in their playoff game against the Vegreville Vortex last Saturday.

The Pacers struggled in the opening minutes of the game even though they were on home turf.

Coach Pete Burden attributed it to not being mentally prepared.

“Vegreville has really improved from when we played them before,” he explained. “We fumbled our first offensive play and gave them the ball. Defensively we were able to play really well, and our offence got going halfway through the first quarter.”

Burden said he had a chat with the team, which made them step it up.

“Halfway through the second quarter, the game was pretty much in hand: it was 26-0,” he said. “That’s when we started putting a lot of our young guys in.”

Burden said this season has been quite strange for his team.

“Now all five of my o-line have scored touchdowns this year,” he explained. “They never get to touch the ball, normally.”

Burden said being ahead by so many points allows the team to mix things up and give its younger players a chance on the field.

The Pacers play against Westlock Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at EPC.

“We play for the tier two championship,” Burden said. “If we win that game, we will play the winner of the consolation in the tier one game.”
