There was a chill in the air and at one stage a smattering of hail ... but nothing could deter a group of paint roller-wielding warriors at the Skate Park on Saturday.

Young volunteers, Town Recreation staff and Barrhead Mayor Gerry St. Pierre – kitted out appropriately in blue overalls – had assembled to paint the ramps black. There were sufficient numbers to complete the job quickly.

The next step will be for youngsters to decide how they want to design the equipment.

Parks director Sue Keenan, who joined in the painting, said the idea was for youths to feel invested in the park.

The park’s grand opening is fixed for June 1, starting at 2 p.m. Mayor St. Pierre and Reeve Bill Lee are expected to be present.

“The kids will also do a demonstration,” said Keenan.
