The latest meet for the Athabasca Rapids Swim Club was rather successful.
A total of 14 swimmers hit the Peter Hemmingway Pool in Edmonton for the Sherwood Park Swim Club’s Mayflower long course invitational Apr. 25 and 26, with two athlete taking top spot overall in their respective age categories.
Claire Francis, in only her first meet, was atop the podium in the 9 and 10 year-old girls division, while Kyra Sheppard took top spot in the 8-and-under division.
A pair of other Rapids swimmers also garnered overall medals – Bo Meier taking second in the 11 and 12 year-old boys and Erica Head finishing third in the 15-and-over girls division.
“There were some very good swims from all of the swimmers,” said Rapids head coach Steve Splinter.
“For a small club, the results were big.”
The meet was also a huge first for a pair of other Rapids – Owen Alix and Peyton Alix – as it was their first time in competition.
A few of the swimmers also competed in the quadrathon – a race of 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle with the times combined for an overall time. And two Rapids came out near the top, Kyra Sheppard finishing second in the girls 8 & under and Francis was third in the girls 9 & 10 division.
Also, Francis and Jake Gerritse did well enough to each earn a spot at the provincial qualifying meet in Grande Prairie June 12 to 14.
