After a long and hard-fought weekend, the final game of the PeeWee tournament in Barrhead was finally upon the Barrhead PeeWee Flyers.
In the B Finals, the Barrhead boys would face off against the Spruce Grove Titans in a battle for the championship. Although the Flyers would come out on top in the end, it would be no easy task.
Barrhead started off working like a well-oiled machine. Just two minutes into the first period, Barrhead player Adam Mueller took a successful shot on net for the first goal of the game, assisted by Owen Weeks.
As the boys continued to bring their best game, the Flyers landed another goal a few minutes later. Robert Kincaid made the goal, and brought the score up to 2-0.
At the end of the first, Barrhead’s spirits were flying high.
However heading into the second, the Titans began to fight back. Three minutes in Spruce Grove got their first goal, putting themselves on the board.
The Flyers retaliated, defending their end and bringing their best offense. With 14 minutes left Barrhead player Justin Haltiner shot the puck past Spruce Grove’s goalie to bring the score to 3-1.
Two could play at this game, and Spruce Grove attacked to score on Barrhead again at the four minute mark.
Scoring action remained high, as Mueller succeeded in landing his second goal of the night with an assist from Brayden Bain.
It looked as though Barrhead would end another period in the lead. Unfortunately Spruce Grove managed to get one last goal with less than two minutes remaining, tying the game up 4-4.
As the final period began, each team fought to break the tie. Mueller was on fire and, assisted by Brendan Bujold, accomplished the tie-break when he scored his third goal of the game three minutes in.
For six minutes the Flyers and Titans battled it out, the teams evenly matched in both skill and determination. At 11 minutes left, Spruce Grove tied the game up yet again at 5-5.
Just under the seven minute mark the Titans brought their full force on Barrhead with another goal, taking the lead for the first time in the game.
This lead however didn’t last long, and Barrhead returned the game to a tie when Weeks scored with an assist from Bain just 40 seconds later.
The tie remained for another action-packed five minutes, until Flyers player Devyn Kerr dodged Spruce Grove’s defenses and shot the puck into the net. With the score at 7-6, the crowd cheered from the stands.
As the clock ticked down, Spruce Grove gained possession of the puck and sped down the ice towards Barrhead’s end. With seconds left, the crowd held their breath as the frenzy of hockey players fought in front of Barrhead’s net.
Despite Spruce Grove’s best efforts, Barrhead goalie Brandon Meier defended his net and was able to hold the score at 7-6 for the Flyers.
