Peewee Trappers set for provincials

The Athabasca Trappers peewee baseball team is waiting to find out where they stand.

The Athabasca Trappers peewee baseball team is waiting to find out where they stand.

After hosting a collection of provincial league games at the Jubilee Diamonds last weekend (and playing three themselves), the Trappers await word on how the provincial tiers are going to shake out.

The 14-team league in which the Trappers play will be split into three tiers, with the top six teams making it into Tier One.

That’s obviously where the Trappers would like to be.

“It’s going to be really tight,” said head coach Doug Steffes.

The Trappers play alongside quite a few talented teams, but they are no pushovers themselves. They won one of their three games on the weekend (11-10 over St. Albert) but all the games were close and could have gone either way, according to the coach.

“They’ve been strong for the last month,” said the coach of his team.

“We’ve had the same philosophy for the last month; take chances. Go for it, don’t hold anything back, have some fun. It seems to be working. The kids are more relaxed, they’re not worried if they make a mistake.”

Steffes hopes that run of success and fun continues when provincial play begins.
