It took only a minute for the Barrhead Pirates Bantam hockey team to go from taking first place in the A division finals to finishing in second place.
On Sunday, Dec. 13, the Pirates lost in overtime to SEERA (South East Edmonton Recreational Association) by a score of two to one.
The Pirates took the lead midway through the first period on a goal by Jeremy Kelly. A lead they were able to hold on to for the rest of the period, despite spending more than their fair share in the defensive zone.
In the second period the Pirates dominated the period in almost every department except the scoreboard. The Pirates spent the majority of their time in the offensive zoned and out shot SEERA 12 to 3.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, SEERA’s Felix Dufor scored the only goal of the period against the play late in the period.
In the third period, neither team could score, in what was basically an evenly played period, with both teams unable to capitalize on numerous scoring chances.
In the extra frame (five minute, four on four) a SEERA player took a two-minute boarding penalty early less than a minute into the period. A little more than two minutes later it look like the Pirates had won the game when Kaleb Rettie scored in a goal mouth scramble in front of the SEERA net.
However, in the midst of the Pirates celebrations, there was some confusion of whether or not the goal should be counted. When the goal was scored SEERA was shorthanded, but according the timekeepers sheet they should have been at full strength. The goal was disallowed and the game was resumed from a face-off in the SEERA zone. Less than a minute later SEERA’s Devon Van Dyke scored on a two on one.
