The Westlock Junior Rock started their season on a high-note with a 10-3 victory over the Lloydminster Extreme April 25.

Rock coach Mike Ivey said he was impressed with his team's performance in their season opener.

"It was a big win for us at our home-opener,” Ivey said. "We've always taken a lot of pride in our compete level. We have guys that have a lot of heart and a lot of battle.”

While he was hoping for a win, Ivey said he didn't expect a blowout.

'I didn't expect the score to be 10-3. As much as that seems like a wide margin, it really isn't in lacrosse. A lot can change, quick," he said. 'I did expect it to be tighter. In the past, Lloydminster has played pretty tough and they're talented."

The Rock pulled ahead early and took a 3-0 lead until the Extreme pushed back in the second, knotting the score 3-3.

'As much as we ran away with it a bit at the end, it was really tight in the second and it could have gone either way," Ivey said. 'We faced a little bit of adversity and we kept going ... the last 10 minutes of the second was unbelievable. We kind of took over the game at that point."

While he was pleased with a full-team effort, Ivey said he was impressed with his younger players.

'We've got quite a few rookies that have come in and stepped up, which is awesome," he said.

Ivey said he hopes to keep the momentum going as the season moves along.

'It's nice to see the boys come together early and I hope we can continue that into a good season," he said. 'We had a good, strong, exhibition game the week before and to start our season off like that is awesome."

The Rock's season continues May 1 when they play host to the Edmonton Wizards.
