Athabasca gymnast Rylan Wagner, 11, placed sixth overall at the 2014 Artistic Gymnastics Provincial Championships April 11–13 in Lethbridge.

When Rylan competed on the parallel bars, he achieved a personal best and placed second.

Rylan also competed in the floor competition and in vault and placed third in both events.

“He did very well on three of the events,” his mother, Angela Wagner, stated. “He had a fall on the pommel horse, which knocked him from third to sixth in the all around, but overall a very successful competition. He is quite happy with his results.”

Rylan stated the weekend was “awesome.”

He said there were nine other boys competing in his age group.

“The competition was really tight,” Angela said. “The point difference between third place and sixth place was .2 of a point.

“It could have been a side step or any kind of mistake took you off the podium — it was that close,” she said. “It was really cool to watch the kids all be at their best.”

Angela said Rylan will continue to train in St. Albert until the end of June. He trains for three hours, three times a week.

“There is one more competition in Canmore at the beginning of May,” Angela said. “There are some girls from (Athabasca Flips Gymnastics Club) attending as well.”

Over the summer, Rylan will most likely attend camps to keep him in shape for next season, which starts in September.
