A stellar season came to an end for the Boyle School Huskies senior girls volleyball team last weekend.

The girls were in Plamondon for the 1A provincial championships. Having won every tournament they had competed in since the beginning of the season, the Huskies entered provincials as one of the most dangerous teams on the court. But although they competed hard, the local girls won two games and lost three, which wasn’t enough to make it to the playoff round.

“It wasn’t like they didn’t show up, they were absolutely there. They put everything out on the court that they had,” said team coach Michelle Lazenby.

“It was unbelievable volleyball. Our girls played very well.”

They got off to a hot start by winning their first two games of the round robin over H.A. Kostash (25-22, 25-21) and Foremost High (27-25, 25-16).

The competition just got tougher from there, however.

They lost their first game to Acme School (25-13, 25-27, 16-18) and their second to Clear Water Academy from Calgary (26-24, 20-25, 11-15).

That meant they were tied for third in their pool, and had to play H.A. Kostash in a one-match tiebreaker. Unfortunately, it was the Smoky Lake team that came out on top by a score of 25-21, which brought an end to the Huskies weekend and season.

“The girls played their hearts out. There were tears for sure, because they were not out of their league. Any team there could have won, the potential was there,” said the coach. “For the core group it was their last year, and they definitely hoped to advance further. (But) they have great things to go onto if they want to continue in volleyball.”

And the girls should certainly be proud of themselves for their amazing run of tournament wins that went unspoiled all the way to provincials.

“I’m just proud of them for what they’ve accomplished all year.”
