The Westlock Atom Selects steamrolled the Morinville Mustang 13-6 on Saturday, securing the bronze title of the Tier 2 1660 Atom Hockey League.

With the game dominated early on by the Stangs, the Selects were finally able to regain the upper hand in the third period to secure the win.

“The first two periods Morinville really took it to us. They played hard and consistent and did what they were supposed to do. Our guys didn’t really play the way we usually play until the third period. Then we played our hockey,” said coach Shane Boulerice.

Nine of the 13 goals scored for the Selects came in the third period, allowing Morinville little chance to catch up before the final buzzer.

Boulerice said he was pleased with the overall effort his team displayed in the game and throughout the season.

“They played how the coaches wanted and they did the things that we asked them to do,” said Boulerice.

With a whole new set of players on the club team next year, Boulerice hopes he can inspire the same result in his new players as he did with his current team.

“Next season we are going to have a different group of kids to work with. Next year hopefully we can do this again.”

With the provincial ‘B’ championships around the corner in Blackfalds, March 23-26, Boulerice said his players are ready for the next level if they continue to play the same way and stick to their game plan.

“I don’t think I’ll change the strategies for those games. Everything will be the same. I expect our kids to bring their ‘A’ game,” said Boulerice.
