It may not have been the gold medal they were hoping for on their home court, but the BCHS Senior Jags girls basketball team pulled out a bronze medal performance in their first tournament action of the year over the weekend.

After dropping their semifinal match against the eventual-champion squad from Camilla School in Rivičre Qui Barre, the girls matched up against Gibbons.

The match against Gibbons was close, with the girls emerging victorious by a score of 44-37.

After the tournament, coach Warren Warehime said he was happy with how the team played, especially considering it was their first tournament this season.

“I thought we played very well in our first tournament,” he said. “It is always a challenge early in the season when players have not played with each other before.”

He added that as the games and tournament progressed, he could see the girls’ play change.

“The girls improved every game … and you could see some chemistry developing on the court, which was good to see,” he said.

The girls started their tournament with a match against Lilian Schick from Bon Accord. In a low-scoring affair, BCHS came away 27-14 winners. That win sent them off to the semifinals against Camilla School.

The game against Camilla was a higher-scoring demonstration of basketball, and in the end Camilla proved too strong and ended up winning the game 38-28, dropping BCHS into the bronze-medal game.

In the gold-medal game, Camilla took on Mayerthorpe. In what Warehime described as a “back and forth thriller,” Camilla outscored Mayerthorpe 32-29 to take home the championship.

The consolation final saw Namao defeat Lilian Schick 26-9.

With the tournament now in their rear-view mirror, Warehime said he’s already preparing for the team’s next tournament and helping the girls reach their full potential on the court.

“Moving forward we look to improve with every game and grow as a team,” he said.

Up next for the girls and boys teams is a trip to Spruce Grove this weekend, which Warehime said will be a big challenge for both squads.

“Our upcoming tournament in Spruce Grove is going to provide a strong test for both the boys and girls as there are many large schools involved,” he said.
