The Edwin Parr Composite Predators senior girls basketball team didnít lose a step in their first tournament after the Christmas break.
Playing against some high calibre teams in Morinville, the girls won all three of their games to claim gold at the tournament.
First up, they played their zone competitor Drayton Valley, and beat them by 18. Their second game was against Camrose, a team thatís currently ranked fourth amongst 3A teams in the province. But the ninth-ranked Predators werenít intimidated as they played a tough game that resulted in a 39-34 victory.
ìItís nice to knock off a higher ranked team this early in the year,î said coach Wade Hicks.
In the tournament finals the local girls met St. Peter The Apostle from Spruce Grove and steamrolled them 75-42 to win gold.
The Predators won it all at the tournament in spite of having a short bench. They had some experience in that area thanks to a tournament in Hinton earlier in the season at which they were also shorthanded (they won there as well).
ìThe effort level they gave was really good.î
The girls were especially passionate about beating higher-ranked Camrose.
ìThey really wanted that game. Every time a loose ball was on the floor, we were on it. They fought hard for rebounds in that game.î
The exam break is coming up, but before that they will play a tournament in Edmonton this weekend.
ìIt could be really big for us. There are another two teams there that are ranked top ten in the province, so hopefully weíll be able to show well again and help ourselves out as far as rankings go.î
