For two weekends running, the super Stingerz of Covenant Canadian Reformed School have been the pride of Neerlandia.

On Nov. 1 and 2 the senior boys and girls turned in gold medal performances at a volleyball tournament in Swan Hills.

A week earlier, it was the senior girls who shone in Westlock, capturing silver after losing in the final to Onoway. The Oct. 25-26 event was at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre.

The teams are made up of Grades 10, 11 and 12 students, who have had time to gel.

The successes have delighted the coaches – James VandenHoven (boys) and Quinton Harthoorn and Kathleen Tuininga (girls).

“We’ve had a wonderful season,” said Tuininga last Wednesday. “The senior girls are quite the team. They have improved a lot.”

Tuininga said some of the girls had played in the team last year, which helped with continuity.

She added both boys and girls Stingerz won gold after competing against teams from Swan Hills, Jasper and Hinton’s Gerard Redmond.

In the finals, they defeated opposition from Gerard Redmond.

It means both teams have booked spots in the Zones tournament. The girls play in Evansburg on Nov. 23, while the boys compete on the same day in Thorhild.
