At the Athabasca Figure Skating Club’s annual carnival, skaters of all levels showcased their abilities and talents at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex on March 11.

Close to 70 skaters hit the ice for the event. The theme was the Juno Awards, Canada’s music awards.

The carnival included skaters from all skill levels from beginners to Star Skate, according to club president Nicole Keith.

“All the kids have worked really hard this year on their group and individual pieces, even the little ones,” Keith said. “They really look forward to the carnival at the end of each year when they get a chance to show their friends and family how much they have learned and what they can do.”

As part of the carnival performance, coach Kevin Woytas and two of the female skaters in the club, Megan Jackson and Kelsey Haggerty, performed their test pieces as part of a routine based around the after party events that might occur at the Junos.

In additional to the after-party dances, other skaters performed duets and solo routines while the younger ones took to the ice in groups. The carnival also hosted the Westlock Precision Skating Senior and Junior teams who displayed their skating synchronization.

Awards were also given out during the Grand Finale presentation after all the performances. The CanSkater of the year awards went to Oscar Woodburn-Elliott while two CanSkate Champions awards went to Rachel Gauthier and Ethan Deveau. Keith noted that the clubs usually gives out their medals to the Jump Start and Star Skate skaters at the carnival but most of them still have some final testing to do in Whitecourt on March 18.
