Local skiers hit the powder at Landing Trail Intermediate School last Thursday for the Aspen View Regional Cross Country Ski Championships.

Students from Kindergarten all the way up to Grade 11 competed in different races, some of them staying on the field and others heading out onto the nearby trails.

“We knocked it out of the ball park as far as participation,” said Landing Trail ski coach Joe MacIsaac, who estimated that 190 skiers took part in the race.

“It’s more of a festival atmosphere. We have music, a concession and all that stuff. The more bits of entertainment we can have, the more fun it is. Landing Trail staff put together a great race every year, and this year was no exception.”

The Kindergarten winners were Brodie Gerritse for the boys and Julianne Safar for the girls.

In Grade 1 it was Liam Day and Avery Kamelchuk who won.

Other boys winners included Matthew Weber (Gr. 2), Reese Hunter (Gr. 3), Carsen Runcer (Gr. 4), Noah Day (Gr. 5), Sam Elgert (Gr. 6), Adam Calliou (Gr. 7), Max Elgert (Gr. 8), Michael MacIsaac-Jones (Gr. 9) and Nils Asfeldt (Gr.11).

The rest of the girls winners were Jazmyn Maheden (Gr. 2), Alyssa Olson (Gr. 3), Abby Elgert (Gr. 4), Anna MacIsaac-Jones (Gr. 5), Shae Bellingham (Gr. 6), Claire Wasel (Gr. 7) and Maya MacIsaac-Jones (Gr. 11).

“It’s obvious these kids are practicing. We’ve got beginners to some of the best skiers around.”
