The Athabasca Soccer Associationís annual tournament was a big success on the weekend.
Held at Whispering Hills Primary School, the tournament welcomed 47 teams in four different divisions (U6, U8, U10, U12). With 24 teams from Athabasca and the rest from the surrounding area, the soccer fields were full on Saturday and Sunday.
With warm weather and plenty of sun on Saturday, all of the young soccer players had a good time.
ìThere were lots of little rug rats running around,î said tournament organizer Lorrill Waschuk.
ìThe kids were loving it.î
Both U6 and U8 teams received participation medals. The U10 division started with a round robin before moving to a medal round. At the end of the day, Athabasca teams swept the top three spots. The Dragons won gold while the Flaming Hippos took home silver. The Goblins won bronze.
On Sunday, a mixed tournament of both boys and girls teams was held, with the winners being determined by the standings at the end of the day.
With about 500 soccer players hitting the field, lots of family and friends watching the games and plenty of volunteers working hard, it was a great event according to Waschuk.
ìItís always a very successful tournament,î she said.
ìWe try to improve it all the time.î
