The Hawks and Steelers faced off against one another in a regular season inter-lock game on Jan. 20 in Barrhead, to settle last week’s tie with Barrhead emerging victorious, 5-3.
In spite of a physically rough game — Athabasca players earned hooking and knee-related penalties in the first, cross-checking and slashing in the second and a game misconduct in the third, Barrhead goalie Ty Steinbring brought his A-game and denied the Hawks 11 out of 14 goal opportunities.
While the Hawks managed to pull to an early lead in the first, the Steelers answered back in the second with goals by Owen Weeks and Mitchel Carstairs, bringing the score to 2-1.
Barely one minute into the third period, Tanner Whiting scored his first goal of the game and teammates Carstairs and Brayden DeRudder followed it up with two more, while Athabasca scored two more.
