The Barrhead Steelers broke their winless streak and in a big way. On Friday, Dec. 2 at the Barrhead Agrena the Steelers defeated Cold Lake 11-1 in Midget ‘A’ action.
Tanner Whiting, Steelers captain, got the team off to a quick start scoring his first of what would be five goals, a minute and a half into the game. Seven minutes later Nick Botros put Barrhead up by two goals and that’s how the period ended.
In the second period Barrhead’s offence exploded scoring five unanswered goals, including three from Whiting. The other goal scorers in the period were Justin Haltiner and Brayden DeRudder.
In the third period Frank Scholten, DeRudder, Whiting and Botros completed the Steelers scoring.
At the 12:35 mark of the period Cold Lake spoiled goaltender Ty Steinbring’s shutout bid scoring on their 18th shot on net.
Head coach Trevor Whiting said a lot of things went well.
“A lot of our players who have been out of the lineup are returning and that helped us a lot,” he said, adding only Mitch Carstairs out of the Steelers regular skaters was not in the lineup.
Whiting added he was very pleased about how they played on special teams, especially on the penalty kill. Barrhead took 13 penalties compared to Cold Lake’s eight and as a result were shorthanded on many occasions, including multiple times when they were two players short.
“Obviously we need to be more disciplined and not take as many penalties, but our penalty kill was really good tonight,” he said.
Currently, as of Dec. 2, the Steelers are in second place, behind Drayton Valley, in the 1660 League with a record of 7-3-2.
Barrhead’s next home game will be against Jasper on Friday, Dec. 9. The puck drop is at 8:15 p.m.
