The Barrhead Steelers lost their first game in seven weeks on the weekend, when they were bested by Stettler Legion Dec. 1.

The boys were off to a good start, scoring the first goal of the game just three minutes in thanks to Nick Perdaems with an assist from Nathan Schmidt.

After playing most of the first period with a 1-0 lead, Stettler managed to sneak one goal in with only one minute left.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the second, and Barrhead was in for a beating. Stettler scored three times, bringing the score to 4-1 at the end of the period.

In the third, Stettler landed another goal against the Steelers, widening the gap to 5-1.

Brad Bujold, assisted by Jordan Smith, managed to get one goal for Barrhead with 12 minutes left in the third. This however would not be enough, and the Steelers left the ice defeated 5-2.

Barrhead’s game Nov. 30 against the Innisfail Kinsmen Flyers went much better for the boys, when they claimed a 3-1 victory.

The first period Barrhead didn’t have much luck. Neither team saw scoring action until four minutes left in the period, when Innisfail attacked and landed the first goal.

Despite a slow start, the Steelers began their comeback early on in the second. Less than a minute in, Barrhead put a point on the board.

Jordan Smith, assisted by Nic Murrell and Koby Adams, slipped the puck past the Innisfail goalie to tie up the game.

The tie wouldn’t last much longer. Just six minutes after their first goal, the Steelers managed to get a second. Brett Bujold, assisted by Zak Laun, pulled Barrhead into the lead when he hammered Innisfail with a successful shot on net.

With only five minutes left in the second period, Brett continued to shine and scored his second goal of the game singlehandedly.

With a goalless third period, the 3-1 score solidified another win for the Steelers.

The Barrhead boys have just three more games in 2013. They play Dec. 6 at their home arena in Barrhead at 8:15 p.m against Ponoka. The weekend after, the Steelers play two away games; the first in Red Deer Dec. 21 and the second in Stettler Dec. 22.
