The Spirit of Westlock Triathlon was conquered by just under 60 athletes Saturday.

And Westlock's own Hendrik van Jaarsveld was the best placed of the locals coming third overall and winning the 40-49 years men's class with a time of 1:09:31, while teenager Nathanael Tabert held his own placing 13th.

Event organizer Travis Darling said despite the inclement weather, the race was a success.

'It went really well," he said. 'The rain kind of held off as much as it could, so all together it went really well."

Competitors from all over northern Alberta took part in the event which included a 750 metre swim, 21 kilometre bike ride, all followed by a five kilometre run.

While competing in the event didn't help towards qualification for other official triathlons, the provincial association approved the race and Darling said many athletes used the race as a yardstick for the season ahead.

'Triathlon in Westlock is a focal point for training, it gives you something to look forward to while you're running the track at the Spirit Centre and is the pinnacle of what you're training for," Darling said.

Overall, Greg Davis of Edmonton won the men's race with a time of 1:07:50 and Lisa Ulrich from St. Albert took the woman's and second overall in a time of 1:08:23.

There were many races within the main race as athletes were divided into gender and age classes with 14 categories overall.

Volunteers lined the run and cycle legs from early in the morning as the competitors snaked their way through the town and county.

Darling said the event wouldn't happen without the support of volunteers, the municipalities and sponsors.

'I can't do it if we don't have the municipality, if we don't have organizations and people that do help out and volunteer and of course the sponsors," he said. 'It all comes together for an event like this.

'There are a whole lot of places that wouldn't hold an event like this. So that's why we attract a whole lot of people."
