Players in the Club 55 Plus Bowling League marked the end of their season with the awarding of plaques and trophies last Friday at Barrhead’s Blue Heron Bowl.
Since 1983 The Barrhead branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has sponsored a trophy for the team winning the most season points.
This year it was Team George with 1,543.5 points. The team is made up of Doris Chizma, Fran George, June Carlson, Florence Surcan and Eric Beniston, who is in his 90s and remains as competitive as ever.
Legion president Vern Frizzell presented the “Legion Trophy” to the team. He also donated a $200 cheque to Elsie Measures, secretary of the Bowling Association and treasurer of the Golden Age Bowlers.
The money will go towards individual plaques and engraving the Legion Trophy.
The Club 55+ year end results for 2011-12 are:
Legion Trophy Champs: Team George (1,543.5 points) – Doris Chizma, Fran George, June Carlson, Florence Surcan, Eric Beniston.
Bowler of the Year: (Roy Young Memorial Trophy) – Bill Wirch, + 116 points.
Tournament of Champs Winners: Team Thompson – 3,840 points; Team Lee – 3756 points. Advancing to north provincial finals in Leduc, May 6.
Men’s Triple Champs: Two teams – Don Jennings, Bill Gower, Morris Thompson and Fred Setterington, Dwayne Harding, Vern Leslie. Advancing to provincial finals in Calgary, April 22.
Individual Awards: Ladies High Average – Margaret Wimmer (185); Ladies High Single: Barbara Rudnicky (284); Ladies High Triple – Doris Chizma (661);
Men’s High Average: Don Jennings (211); Men’s High Single – Glen Thompson (305); Men’s High Triple – Gary Schulte (763);
Team High Single: Thompson (1,310 points)
Team High Triple: Rhyne (3,592 points)
Measures said the Club 55 Plus had 90 members and 18 teams. It meets every Friday at the bowling alley. Spring Fun League begins May 7 at 1 p.m., while the regular league begins Sept. 7.
