Calf roping, barrel racing, bull riding, steer wrestling and ribbon roping are just some of the competitions being showcased at this years rodeo. The events are open to women and men. The competitions will be separated into age four age groups: 40-49, 50-59, 60+ and 70+.

The rodeo is attracting competitors from as far away as Wyoming and Oregon, USA.

Big names like local World Champion steer wrestler Darcy Miller and former Canadian calf roping champion Bill Reeder will also be competing this year says event coordinator and competitor Randy Schmidt.

“We do have quite of few local competitors this year, like my father Leonard Schmidt, Perry Dahlside, Larry and Betty Adams, Darcy and Jackie Miller, there’s quite a lot this year,” explains Schmidt about the local influence in this years rodeo.

Planning to involve more people in the community this year Schmidt is hoping to shuttle out seniors from the Hillcrest Lodge who otherwise would not be able to take part in enjoying this year’s competition.

“If the weather allows it we’ll… bring some of the old folks down to come and watch,” says Schmidt, “I think some of them would really enjoy seeing another 70 year old rope a cow.”

The rodeo is free of admission and will have concession during the day as well as a beer garden. During the evening of the 16 there will be a potluck supper at the rodeo grounds and a silent auction.

“We actually have Charlie Parsons from Sunnyside (Realty Ltd) coming down to do the auction for us and liven up the evening,” says Schmidt.

The Barrhead Rodeo Grounds are located just off Highway 18 behind the Agrena. The competitions will start 11:00 a.m., Monday the 16 and 10:00 a.m., Tuesday 17. The Monday potluck and silent auction will be taking place at 7:00 p.m.
