The Westlock midget Warriors’ quest for a provincial title is over.

Despite giving it their best effort in their Midget ‘D’ Provincial playoff game at the Rotary Spirit Centre on Feb. 15, the Warriors lost 11-0 to the Spruce Grove ‘AA’ Saints.

“They played really well here against the ‘AA’ team,” Warriors assistant coach Dan Mayowski said after the tilt. “They’re a ‘AA’ team and they’re quite a few levels above us, and they played very well.”

Warriors goalie, Colin Decker, was faced with a non-stop barrage of rubber as he faced 69 shots on the night.

“It’s kind of been that way all year for our goalies and it just shows how good that they are,” coach Jeff Copeland said.

“Out of 69 shots, only letting in 11 goals, is only a goal every six shots which is pretty good for the goals against average.

“You know, it doesn’t look good to loose 11-0, but like I said when you’re facing 69 shots in game and only let in 11, it shows how hard that they tried.”

The Warriors ended the first period only down 2-0. In the second, Spruce Grove ramped up their game, scoring five more to take a 7-0 advantage into the final frame.

So far the Warriors sit with a record of three wins, 15 losses and one tie in the 1660 Hockey League regular season, which is quickly coming to a close.

“We still have two more league games and then we have league playoffs as well,” Mayowski said. “And then playoffs will be determined in another week after league is done.”

The club’s last game of the regular season will take place next Friday night at the Spirit Centre when they face Vegreville.
