Grade eights were great and grade nines were fine … and the girls in grade seven were in athletic heaven!

McKenna Dievert, Morgan McKain and Jill Starman were Grade 7 stars as Barrhead’s track and field impressed during Tuesday’s Divisionals at Barrhead Composite High School.

Seventy-five junior high Barrhead students took part in the meet, which also featured R. F. Staples, St. Mary’s, Clyde, Fawcett, Fort Assiniboine and Jarvie.

By the time the last discus was thrown, the last javelin thrown, the last jump completed, the last relay run, 25 Barrhead students had qualified for the Zones in St. Albert.

“Once again our students performed with distinction and did us all proud,” said teacher and coach Colin Erickson.

Erickson said the Grade 7 girls were outstanding, blowing away the opposition in the relay and turning in magnificent individual displays.

Dievert finished first overall with 18 points, McKain came second (12 points), and Starman took third spot (10 points).

Tyson Chizma also excelled, claiming third place for Grade 9 boys, scoring 10 out of a possible 20 points. Perhaps his most impressive performance came in the triple jump when he soared 10.8 metres.

Another eye-catching moment for the boys came in the high jump – Cole Knudsen cleared 170 centimetres to take second place in that event.

For the Grade 8 girls, Sam Dodds took top honours, recording 11 points in her second place.
