The Barrhead Twilighters are the new Pembina Senior Slowpitch Champions for the first time, after emerging from the league playoffs victorious last month.
Team representative and player Reg Steinbring said the Twilighters had a really good season, and won about 50 per cent of the games they played.
The playoff tournament was a one evening event, where Fort Asiniboine, Sangudo, Barrhead Seniors, and Barrhead Twilighters faced off against one another.
Though they only won about 50 per cent of their games during the regular season, Steinbring said the tournament went really well for the team. The Twilighters picked the right time to perform their best, coming out on top.
“It’s the first year we ever won the league,” said Steinbring. “I was really hyped up, and the team was really hyped up. It feels really good.”
Steinbring added it was unfortunate Gerald Nanninga, a former teammate who was killed tragically a few years ago, was unable to be here for their accomplishment.
“His goal was to win the league and he never got that opportunity,” said Steinbring, remembering his fallen teammate.
Winning the tournament was the highlight of the team’s year, said Steinbring. However, the league is equally about the social aspect of being part of a team as it is about playing.
“The team gets along so well socially, so it’s a lot of fun playing on this team,” he said. “They’re a good bunch of guys.”
The group of softballers also have an “awesome group of wives” who have supported the team every year, said Steinbring. “They do a lot for our club.”
The team began playing in May and participated in seven tournaments throughout the season, finishing up the year with a tournament in Drayton Valley the last weekend in August.
