Westlock Taekwondo wins big at weekend tournaments

Three Westlock athletes came home with some hardware from the Western Canadian Tournament of Champions, an inter-provincial taekwondo competition.

Three Westlock athletes came home with some hardware from the Western Canadian Tournament of Champions, an inter-provincial taekwondo competition.

The tournament was held in Calgary May 5, and all three of the Westlock competitors brought earned podium finishes in their events.

There were to competition categories: patterns and sparring. The former involves going through a set series of moves, while the second involves being in direct competition with another athlete.

Nikole Trieber earned a gold medal in patterns and a silver medal in sparring, Janette Balderston won the gold medal for her work in patterns, and A.J. Balderston nabbed a silver medal for both patterns and sparring.

A total of 250 competitors from across western Canada took part in the tournament, competing in a wide range of age groups and skill levels.

Coach Sabine Goller, who attended the tournament as a referee as well as a coach, said she was happy with her students’ performances.

“I want to congratulate all the students who took part in the tournament,” she said. “I am very proud of them.”

The weekend tournament comes on the heels of another big tournament just one week prior, the Northern Spirit invitational taekwondo championships in Slave Lake on April 28.

Three Westlock competitors, amongst a total 169 competitors, took home medals from that tournament, as well.

Nikole Trieber won a gold in patterns and bronze in sparring, Reid Pidsadowski won gold in sparring and bronze in patterns, while Zachery Leprine won silver in both patterns and sparring.
