The Westlock Peewee Wild girls softball team won their league championship on Saturday in Clyde and will now advance to the Peewee ‘C’ Provincials in Calahoo from July 4-6.
The U-14-16 Pembina Sturgeon League year-end tournament featured two peewee and one bantam team from Westlock, Legal, Redwater and Barrhead.
In the morning, the Westlock Peewee 1 team was pitted against Redwater and Barrhead, who they defeated 10-3 and 10-1 respectively. This put them in first place within their pool.
In the semi-final, they went up against the Westlock bantam team, who had finished second in the other pool after losing to Legal 10-8 and beating the Peewee 2 team by a score of 10-6.
The Wild downed the Westlock bantam team. Coach John Guelly said they were in control for most of the tournament, though their match versus the bantam squad was probably their toughest.
In the final, Westlock defeated Legal 13-1 after four innings.
Guelly said the Wild have been undefeated in league play all year.
“It has been a good a year,” he added.
He noted they also won the Serenity Landry Memorial Fairplay Tournament in Edmonton on the June 13-15 weekend.
They had lost one match in the round robin but still managed to qualify for the final game and ended up winning the gold medal, he said.
Third place in the Pembina Sturgeon League year-end tournament was won by the Barrhead team, which faced off with the Westlock bantam squad in the bronze medal match.
