Dorothy Adair
The matriarch of the Adair clan has passed. Dorothy Adair, 97 years of age, passed away peacefully at the Barrhead Hospital surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born in Glasgow, Scotland to George and Margaret (Strath) Cook, the only surviving child as an older sister, Margaret, died in infancy.
Mom was also predeceased by her husband, James in 2001 and her daughter Isla (Nicholson) in 2021. She is survived by four children, Sharon (Rick) Armstrong, Lorna (Ken) Corraini, Ian (Sonia) Adair, Val (Ken) Bezushko and son-in-law Ed Nicholson. She will be missed by her 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, many with whom she had created strong bonds. She was predeceased by her special friend Steve Grielach and leaves behind her treasured friend Marj Preugschas.
Mom worked for many years as the bookkeeper at The Barrhead Tire Shop. She was a lifelong member of the Barrhead United Church, an active member of the UCW, served for years on the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and she sang with the Versatile Choir while living at Hillcrest. Dorothy met James Adair during WW2 in Glasgow. They married in October 1945. As a war bride she travelled to Canada by ship and then across the country by rail to Edmonton where Dad met her as he had previously returned on the troop ship QE2.
They started their married life on the farm in Campsie, a difficult life after Glasgow. They were some of the young Canadians that built homes and established families after the war, always striving for a better life for their children. Mom instilled in her children and grandchildren the proper way to behave, to dress, to conduct oneself and always to treasure family. Mom became a true Canadian but was always recognizable by her Scottish broque, and in her heart Scotland would always be home.
She was well loved and will be fondly remembered - especially whenever one hears the piper playing or sees a field of heather. A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm July 8, 2023 at the Rose Garden Chapel. Lunch will follow at Barrhead Senior Citizens Drop In Centre. If you wish to pay tribute to Mom the family would suggest donations to the Barrhead Healthcare Centre which took such good care of Mom to the very end.
