Garth Thomas Barkemeyer
July 25, 1959 - December 21, 2023
It is with great sadness, we announce that Garth left us on December 21, 2023, in Williams Lake, BC at the age of 64. Garth was born in Innisfail, AB, middle child to Herman and Inga. Growing up in Camp Creek, he attended school in Barrhead before quitting school to work in Swan Hills. He met his wife, Janis, and they married in 1977. Their daughter, Kerrie Jean was born in Barrhead in 1980, and the family moved to Grande Prairie later that year. Their son, Aaron Lee, was born in 1986 in Grande Prairie. The family later moved to Grovedale in 1989, where they had horses and later established an elk farm.
Garth started working in the oil industry in his teenage years, working all over Canada and the rest of the world including Libya and Syria - until his retirement in 2018, where he and Janis moved to 150 Mile House, BC. Garth loved his cats, Likely and Mabel. He loved nature, guns, hunting, fishing, and taking his children and grandsons, Kaden and Kais, camping.
Garth leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Janis, daughter Kerrie (Jeremy), son Aaron (Krystal), grandchildren Kaden (Emily), Kais and Khloe, his parents Herman and Inga, brother John (Denise), sister Cindy (Randy), uncle John and auntie Joyce, mother-in-law Dene Munro, Janis’ sisters (Pat, Karen (Scott), Sheri, Andrea and Cheryl (Rick)), his nieces, nephews, and cousins. Plus his many, many friends.
Garth’s Celebration of Life will be held February 5, 2024 from 12:00pm -3:00pm, at the Grande Prairie Legion Br. #54 (9912-101 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB). In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Bandaged Paws Animal Shelter in Grande Prairie. Your contributions will honour Garth by helping make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
