Violet Elsie Brade

August 31, 1942 – March 8, 2023

It is with great sadness we have to say farewell to Violet Brade, a loving mother, grandmother and sister who passed away March 8, 2023 at Barrhead Healthcare Centre at the age of 80. Violet was born at home, the second child of Gus and Elizabeth Gerth. On May 5, 1961 she married Ewald Brade. They had four children, Robert-1962, Johnnie-1965, Barry-1969 and Nadine-1972.

Throughout her life Violet proved she was a strong, resilient, tough, hardworking, and a generous woman through hardship and adversity. Even with the deaths of three of her children and her husband and with the challenges she faced with her own health issues and with her son Barry’s MS diagnosis she showed her strength. Before moving to Hillcrest, in the past twenty-five years her home was the gathering place for family and she always prepared feasts and welcomed family and friends to her home, asking nothing in return but your attendance.

In September, 2021 Violet broke her femur and this changed her life thereafter. She knew she couldn’t continue living in her home and along with Barry they made the very difficult decision to sell the house and move to Hillcrest Lodge which has been their home ever since.

Violet suffered from COPD these past few years and the constant need for Oxygen greatly impacted her life. She seemed content living at the lodge, and always said she was doing good. Even the last days of her life she still said she was good even though the congestion made her breathing laboured. She still had a smile and was concerned about the rest of the family. We will always remember her kindness, generosity, and love of her family.

Violet was predeceased by her husband Ewald, her children Robert, Johnnie and Nadine, her parents Gustav and Elizabeth Gerth and sisters Rose Thompson and Darlene Steidel-Chapman.

She leaves to mourn her son Barry, grand-daughter Shelby, brother Gus, and sisters Linda (Paul) Lavoie and Esther (Chris) Mattson as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

We would like to thank Hillcrest Lodge Staff for their kindness and care during her residency at the Lodge.

Memorial Donations may be made to Barrhead Friends of the M.S. Clinic Association

A Celebration of Life will be held May 5, 2023, 1:00 pm at Rose Garden Chapel.
