Diana Byrtus (nee Casavant)
March 30, 1927 - May 6, 2020
Diana Byrtus passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at the age of 93 years.
Diana spent her life helping others. She was a nurse at several hospitals throughout the US and in Athabasca before becoming a Public Health Nurse with the Athabasca Health Unit for 23 years. She was an active CWL member for over six decades starting in 1958 and after retirement, she continued to help others by volunteering at the Lodge and Extendicare where she spent her final days.
Diana is survived by her husband of 64 years, Stanley, her children; Gary (Lilly), Darcy (Catherine), Monica, Kirk (Glenda), her grandchildren; Lisa, Laura (Jacob), Eric (Jackie), Jed, Dustin, and her great-grandson Adam. She is also survived by her sister Theresa, and her brothers; Albert, Lucien, and Jerry.
Diana was predeceased by her parents Aime and Helena, her sisters; Madelaine, Aline, Denise, Antoinette, and her brother Frank.
Special thanks to Dr. Burger and the staff at Athabasca Extendicare for her care in recent months.
After much consideration of the current international health crisis, the Byrtus family is choosing to postpone the celebration of Diana’s life until a later date when friends and extended family can honor her memory. We appreciate there are many people who knew Diana and want to join in the celebration, however ensuring the gathering is safe and inclusive for all who wish to attend is the family priority. At this time we encourage everyone to prioritize their own health and safety.
A private graveside service was held at the Athabasca Community Chapel on Monday, May 12, 2020. We will confirm the date of our celebration in forthcoming announcements and appreciate your understanding and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a local charity of your choice.
