CHROMIAK, Mary

October 2, 1930 – December 16, 2021

On December 16th, 2021 Mrs. Mary Chromiak (nee. Greschuk) of Boyle passed away at the age of 91 years. Mary was born in Sunland, AB on October 2nd, 1930, the second child of Nick and Olga Greschuk. In 1936, the family moved to the Frains area where Mary attended the Black Loam school. She later moved to Edmonton where she worked at Swift Packers until she married Orest Chromiak on November 9th, 1951. In 1961, after several moves that included Edmonton and Calgary, they bought farmland near Grassland where they raised their four children. Together they were farmers, as well as Orest being along-haul trucker. Mary made her life in the Grassland area, helping with the children’s after school activities and actively participating in the community. Once the children left home, Mary and Orest travelled from coast to coast and up to Inuvik. They also travelled to Hawaii and other US locations for vacations. After Orest passed in 1986, Mary stayed on the farm until she moved to Boyle in 2008. She participated in the Boyle community and the farmers market where she was well known for her perogies, cabbage rolls, and other Ukrainian food. After adownturn with her health, she moved into the Boyle Villa where she actively participated in all the activities.

Mary is survived by her sons: Kenneth (Barbara) of Leduc and David of Grassland; daughter: Joan Chrusch of Athabasca; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Peter (Jenny) Greschuk of Drayton Valley and Wally (Gloria) Greschuk of Edmonton; as well as her sisters: Eva (Barry) Hunt of Calgary, LucyBuchannan of Australia, Nadia Kuzyk of Edmonton and Alice (Jerry) Kitt of Edmonton.

Mary was predeceased by her husband: Orest; her son: Alan; her brother: Alec Greschuk; sister: Vera Nahornoff; her parents: Nick and Olga Greschuk; and her son in law: Raymond Chrusch. Afuneral service was held on Wednesday,December 22nd, 2021 at the Athabasca Community Chapel, officiated by Father Roland Shyian with Interment following at the Sarrail Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.
